Walker Electrical Developments carries out Motor and Drive Installation for industrial clients across Preston and the PR2 area. Electric motors and variable speed drives are at the heart of most industrial processes, powering conveyors, pumps, fans, compressors, mixers, and a vast range of other plant. Getting the installation right matters enormously for performance, energy efficiency, and long-term reliability. Our NICEIC registered engineers carry out motor and drive installations to manufacturer specifications and current industry standards.
More Information
A motor or drive that is not correctly specified for its application will not perform reliably and will cost more to run. Before any installation, we review the application requirements carefully. For motors, this includes the load type, duty cycle, starting method, and environmental conditions. For variable speed drives, it includes the motor characteristics, the required speed range, braking requirements, and any harmonics considerations. Correct specification at the outset prevents problems during commissioning and throughout the life of the installation.
Motor installation involves both mechanical and electrical work. The motor must be correctly aligned with the driven load, correctly mounted to prevent vibration, and correctly coupled or belted. The electrical connection must use appropriately sized cables, correctly installed glands, and the right type of termination for the motor terminal box. Variable speed drives must be installed with the correct input and output filtering, the right cable types, and proper EMC earthing. We handle all of this as part of every motor and drive installation across Preston.
A variable speed drive must be correctly commissioned after installation. This involves setting the motor nameplate parameters, configuring the acceleration and deceleration ramps, setting the speed reference source, and configuring any protection functions for the specific application. Incorrect commissioning causes nuisance trips, poor motor control, and premature drive failure. Our engineers commission drives to the specific requirements of the application, test the full speed range under load, and document all parameter settings for future reference.
Walker Electrical Developments was founded 25 years ago to serve the industrial and commercial electrical needs of businesses across Preston and Lancashire. From day one, we made a deliberate decision to focus exclusively on industrial and commercial work. That focus has shaped everything we do. Our electricians and engineers are experienced in environments that general contractors rarely encounter, including high-voltage distribution systems, motor drive installations, PLC control panels, and large-scale factory rewires. We are NICEIC registered and committed to delivering work that is safe, documented, and fully compliant.

We recently installed and commissioned eight variable speed drives as part of a pump station upgrade for a water management facility in the Ribble Valley area north of Preston. Each drive was configured individually for its specific pump duty, including setting the process control PID parameters. The upgrade delivered a significant improvement in energy consumption compared to the previous direct-on-line starting arrangement.
STILL NOT SURE?
We install a wide range of electric motors and variable speed drives for industrial applications across Preston, including AC induction motors, IE3 efficiency class motors, and drives from major manufacturers including ABB, Siemens, Danfoss, and Schneider. We work on single motor applications and multi-drive installations as part of larger automation projects.
We respond to drive failures at industrial sites across Preston and Lancashire as quickly as possible. Drive replacements often need to be sourced first, but we can assess the failed drive, identify the replacement, and carry out the installation and commissioning as fast as the supply situation allows. Call 07360 544264 for urgent drive replacement requirements.
Variable speed drives reduce energy consumption significantly on pump, fan, and conveyor applications by matching motor speed to actual demand rather than running at full speed continuously. They also reduce mechanical wear, allow soft starting without high inrush currents, and can improve process control. Walker Electrical Developments can carry out a drive application assessment at your Preston site.
